Pharaoh’s Dilemma

Sculpture Description

This tall, imposing sculpture of cast iron and bronze offers us a glimpse into both ancient times and abstract thinking. Much like a memorial statue or totem figure of native american culture, this artwork blurs the lines between the ideas of power, burden, and legacy that repeatedly echo through history.

Artist's Statement

Our environment is thick with the presence of spirits. They touch us with unseen hands and speak to us with silent voices, their influence is strong. They presage our relationship to those who come after us. One thousand years of history is held in one imperishable oak. -This sculpture combines abstract figurative elements with imagery suggestive of both Egyptian culture and the era of the crusades speaking to the effects on society of dominant cultures.

Pharaoh’s Dilemma presents a tall, enigmatic form that merges ancient monumentality with contemporary abstraction. Constructed from cast iron and bronze, its layered surfaces and vertical posture suggest both a totemic figure and a stylized obelisk. Payne describes his work as reflecting a world where “our environment is thick with the presence of spirits” exerting a “strong influence”. The sculpture bridges past and present through historical allusion—referencing earlier cultures to evoke broader meaning.

Pharaoh’s Dilemma explores power, legacy, and cultural memory through narrative abstraction: its upright form and textured surfaces encourage reflection on unseen forces and historical continuity, where symbolic imagery and material presence converge into a structure like the monument it presents.
